The Battle

History & Significance

Edward III's second major invasion of Scotland in 1335 achieved temporary success. He captured Edinburgh Castle and installed Balliol, but the Scottish resistance led by Andrew Murray refused to accept defeat. Edward could occupy Scotland but not pacify it — guerrilla warfare continued in the north and the Scottish castles he captured required English garrisons he could not afford. Within a decade all his gains were reversed.
