Coenwulf of Mercia led a campaign to suppress a Kentish uprising and captured the Kentish king Præn, having him blinded and tonsured to disqualify him from kingship. The brutal suppression cemented Mercian control over Kent and eliminated any prospect of Kentish independence for a generation.
