History & Significance

The MacKays of Strathnaver fought a significant battle against the MacLeods of Assynt at Aldcharrish in Sutherland. The MacLeods of Assynt were a distinct branch from the Dunvegan MacLeods and disputed territories along the Sutherland-Ross border. MacKay victory confirmed their dominance of the far north interior. The MacLeods of Assynt later became notorious as the family that captured the fugitive Marquess of Montrose in 1650.
