History & Significance

Sweyn Forkbeard sacked Thetford and was met by Ulfcytel Snillingr (Ulfcytel the Bold). Though ultimately a Danish victory, Ulfcytel's men inflicted such casualties that Scandinavian sources gave him the title "snillingr" (bold) and called him one of the most formidable English warriors. The battle shows that individual English leaders could fight effectively — the failure was strategic and political, not military.
