The Battle

History & Significance

When news of Malcolm III's death at Alnwick reached Scotland, his brother Donald Ban seized the throne with the backing of the traditional Gaelic faction who resented the Normanising influence Malcolm had brought via his queen Margaret. Donald immediately expelled the English and Norman courtiers who had clustered around Malcolm's court. His coup was a conservative reaction against the cultural changes Malcolm and Margaret had introduced. Though he was twice ousted, Donald represented the last serious attempt to restore traditional Gaelic kingship in Scotland.
