History & Significance

The Norse raided Anglesey again in 961 in a period of renewed Viking activity across the Irish Sea zone. The Annals of Ulster record this raid as particularly severe. Anglesey monastery at Llanbadarn and other religious houses were plundered. The raid occurred during the reign of the aggressive Norse king Olaf Cuaran of Dublin who maintained constant pressure on Welsh coastal communities.
