Reigate was one of several Surrey towns where Parliamentary authority was maintained against sporadic Royalist raids during 1643. The Surrey county committee was one of the more effective in the southeast and kept the county firmly in parliamentary hands despite its proximity to the Royalist strongholds in the Thames Valley. Reigate's position on the main road south from London made its security important for parliamentary communications with Sussex.
