History & Significance

The 1539 organisation of the Kent coastal beacon chain was the most comprehensive military signalling system established in England up to that point. Kent, as the county closest to continental Europe, received particular attention and its beacon network was designed to give maximum warning of any cross-Channel fleet movement. The system established in 1539 underpinned the rapid warning the Armada triggered in 1588 — almost fifty years of regular maintenance and occasional testing had made it a reliable and well-understood instrument.
