The Duke of Northumberland advanced from London toward East Anglia as Mary Tudor raised her standard at Framlingham. His army began to melt away at Bury St Edmunds as news arrived that the Privy Council in London had switched allegiance to Mary; Northumberland halted and then surrendered.
