Ripon was occupied by the rebel Northern Earls during their southward march in November 1569. The celebration of the Catholic mass at Ripon Cathedral was a symbolic restoration of the old religion. The occupation demonstrated how quickly traditional northern towns rallied to the earls. Ripon was also significant as it lay between the concentrations of loyal gentry further south and the rebel heartland in the northeast.
