History & Significance

While the Pilgrimage of Grace was centred on Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, the Midlands counties watched the events with considerable sympathy. Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and the northern parts of Leicestershire had strong connections to the north and monasteries that were being dissolved. The failure of the movement to spread south of the Trent into the Midlands proper was partly due to swift royal response and partly because Midland gentry proved more cautious than their northern counterparts.
