History & Significance

The 1539 Cornwall coastal muster was ordered alongside the commissioning of St Mawes and Pendennis castles to guard the Fal estuary. The Cornish tin miners, who had formed the backbone of the coastal watch for generations, were formally incorporated into the defence network and armed at royal expense. The muster inaugurated the most significant investment in Cornish coastal defence since the Norman period.
