The Battle

History & Significance

Alexander of Lochalsh, nephew of the last Lord of the Isles, attempted to reassert MacDonald power in Ross in 1490 by raiding the Black Isle and Easter Ross. James IV commissioned government forces to suppress the revolt. The action around the Cromarty Firth was part of the systematic programme by which James IV dismantled the remnants of Lordship of the Isles power in the north before the formal forfeiture of 1493.
