The Battle

History & Significance

Edward Balliol had been crowned King of Scots at Scone after Dupplin Moor and held court at Annan. Just weeks after his coronation, a Scottish force surprised his headquarters at night. Balliol barely escaped — reportedly fleeing without time to dress properly, wearing one boot and leaping onto an unsaddled horse. The episode was humiliating but temporary; Balliol returned with English support and the war continued for years.
