The Battle

History & Significance

The blockhouse on Brownsea Island in Poole harbour, commissioned in 1545 at the height of the French threat, was designed to prevent any enemy vessel from using the capacious Poole harbour as a base or refuge. Its commanding position on the island controlled the main channel into what was then one of the largest natural harbours in southern England.
