History & Significance

Even after the transfer of Columba's relics to Dunkeld for safety from Iona raids, Norse raiders reached Dunkeld in 848. The town at the southern edge of the Highland line was not as remote as assumed. The raid showed that no Scottish ecclesiastical centre was truly safe from Viking attack. Kenneth MacAlpin's kingdom faced the challenge of protecting both its religious and political institutions from Norse assault.
