The Battle

History & Significance

In January 1537, Sir Francis Bigod dispatched John Hallam with a party of rebels to seize Scarborough Castle as part of his renewed rising independent of Aske. Hallam gained access to the town but was repulsed from the castle and captured. The failed assault on Scarborough, combined with the simultaneous failure at Hull, destroyed Bigods plan for a northern coastal base and effectively ended his revolt within days.
