The Battle

History & Significance

After the defeat of the western rebel army at Sampford Courtenay, fugitive rebel leaders including Humphrey Arundell fell back into Cornwall seeking refuge. Trematon Castle near Saltash provided a temporary shelter for some rebel leaders before they were caught by pursuing royal forces. The castle, an ancient fortification in the Tamar valley, was occupied briefly during the aftermath before being retaken.
