History & Significance

Camber Castle near Rye, originally a small blockhouse built in 1512 and greatly expanded in 1539, guarded the only major harbour on the Sussex coast capable of sheltering a large invasion fleet. The 1539 muster and expansion brought the fort to its definitive form with a central keep surrounded by four circular corner bastions.
