History & Significance

The Chronicle records that in 912 Edward went to Maldon in Essex and camped there while Witham was being fortified. Many people who had previously been under Danish rule submitted to him. Witham was the first of Edward Essex burhs and controlled the route into the Danelaw from the south-west. The peaceful submission of English Danes who preferred West Saxon rule over their Danish lords was a recurring feature of the reconquest.
