History & Significance

Cromwell fought one of his early cavalry actions to relieve the Parliamentary garrison at Gainsborough. He routed the Royalist cavalry (killing Cavendish), but Newcastle's army arrived and the garrison was forced to capitulate. The see-saw nature of the Gainsborough actions illustrated Parliamentary weakness in Lincolnshire before Winceby.
