History & Significance

Venutius, ex-consort of the pro-Roman queen Cartimandua, had seized power during the revolt of 69 AD and expelled Cartimandua. Cerialis launched a massive campaign with four legions to subdue the Brigantes. Several pitched battles were fought across the Pennines and Vale of York. The campaign completed the Roman occupation of northern England and secured Yorkshire for the province.
