History & Significance

The first major Parliamentary assault on Basing House (the great mansion of the Marquess of Winchester) was repulsed in 1643. The house, defended by a fervent Catholic household, became the longest-besieged place in the Civil War. Three major assaults over two years all failed before Cromwell's final storm in October 1645.
