Following his victory at Heavenfield, Oswald established overlordship over southern English kingdoms including Mercia, East Anglia, and parts of Wessex. This Northumbrian supremacy forced Penda into a subordinate position until Oswald overreached. Bede records Oswald as the most powerful king of his time.
