History & Significance

Bothwell Castle — one of the largest stone castles in Scotland, dramatically sited above the Clyde — was a major prize during the Wars of Independence. It changed hands multiple times. The 1299 recovery by Scottish patriots during Wallace's guardianship was one of several sieges of this great fortress. The castle's massive round donjon remained one of the most impressive fortifications in Scotland throughout the medieval period.
