The Battle

History & Significance

Cromwell called it his "crowning mercy." Charles II led a Scottish army into England hoping the English would rise for him — they didn't. Cromwell's forces outnumbered him nearly two to one. After bitter street fighting Charles fled — spending six weeks as a fugitive hiding in oak trees and priest holes before escaping to France. He would not return for nine years.
