History & Significance

Castle Tioram on Loch Moidart was the seat of the MacDonalds of Clan Ranald, one of the most powerful branches of the shattered Lordship of the Isles. The remoteness of Moidart made it effectively ungovernable by Edinburgh. Government rent collectors and legal agents were regularly expelled. The castle and its clan remained outside effective government control until the Jacobite risings.
