History & Significance

On the Scottish right at Flodden, the Earls of Crawford and Montrose led their division down the hill to engage the English left under Sir Edward Stanley. Unlike Home's success on the opposite wing, Crawford and Montrose were outflanked by Stanley's archers who moved around the hillside. English archery decimated the Scottish right and Stanley's billmen completed the destruction. Crawford was killed; Montrose wounded. The collapse of the right left James IV's centre exposed on its flank.
