History & Significance

The Dumnonii of Devon and Cornwall were the westernmost substantial tribe in Britain. Roman advance into their territory followed the Durotriges conquest. A legionary fortress was established at Isca Dumnoniorum (Exeter) as the base for southwestern operations. The Dumnonii appear to have offered less coordinated resistance than the Durotriges, but the rugged terrain of Dartmoor and the Cornish peninsula made sustained campaigning difficult.
