Dumfries Castle was occupied by English forces during the 1296 campaign and an English keeper installed. Its position controlling the principal crossing of the River Nith and the main routes from England into Galloway made it essential to English control of the south-west. The castle would later be the site of the killing of Comyn by Bruce in February 1306, demonstrating that English occupation was maintained in name only even in this period.
