History & Significance

The battle that ended Mercian dominance of the English kingdoms. Egbert of Wessex defeated and humiliated Mercia — then proceeded to accept the submission of Kent, Sussex, and Essex. England was moving toward a single kingdom. Beornwulf was later killed fighting the East Angles.
