In his later years the Lord Rhys resumed aggressive campaigning despite his nominal alliance with Henry II. After Henry's death in 1189 Rhys campaigned extensively against Norman Marcher lords in the south and east. His raids into Gwent and capture of multiple Norman castles in his last years showed the continued military power of Deheubarth even after the death of his English patron. His death in 1197 fragmented Deheubarth into competing dynastic claims.
