The Battle

History & Significance

The Brut y Tywysogion records repeated fighting between Gwynedd and Deheubarth in the early tenth century as the sons and grandsons of Rhodri Mawr competed for supremacy. Hywel Dda eventually ended this fighting by uniting Gwynedd and Deheubarth under peaceful co-rule, but the battles of the intervening period were part of the constant inter-kingdom violence that weakened Welsh resistance to external pressure.
