The Battle

History & Significance

In the Year of the Four Emperors (69 AD), Roman civil war left Britain weakened. Venutius raised a full revolt, and though Rome evacuated Cartimandua herself, it could not defeat Venutius. The Brigantes — the largest tribe in Britain — were now openly hostile under a warlike king. This forced Rome to commit to full military conquest of the north: Petillius Cerialis was appointed governor specifically to deal with Venutius, arriving in 71 AD.
