The Marquess of Winchester turned his enormous mansion into a Royalist fortress from the outset. Parliamentary forces from Hampshire and Surrey made repeated assaults in 1643 but failed to break through its earthwork outworks. The garrison sorties caused serious losses to the besiegers.
