History & Significance

Burgred of Mercia, who had married Æthelwulf's daughter, requested West Saxon military assistance against the Welsh who had invaded Mercia. Æthelwulf joined him and together they subdued all Wales and Burgred accepted their submission. The joint campaign showed the new Wessex-Mercia alliance cemented by the royal marriage.
