The Gunns of Caithness and the MacKays of Sutherland were perpetual adversaries. The Gunns occupied the area between the MacKay and Sinclair territories and fought both their neighbours throughout the fifteenth century. This engagement represents the MacKays' successful resistance to Gunn expansion into Strathnaver.
