History & Significance

Hillmorton in Warwickshire was one of several enclosure sites attacked by levellers during the Midlands Rising of 1607. The hedges and fences enclosing former common land were pulled down and ditches filled in by groups of commons acting under the general inspiration of Captain Pouch. The Hillmorton levelling occurred as part of the spreading wave of anti-enclosure action across Northamptonshire and Warwickshire.
