History & Significance

After the reverse at Otford in 776, Offa spent years reasserting control over Kent. By the mid-780s he had Kent firmly under his thumb, controlling the appointment of archbishops and granting away Kentish lands to Mercian churches. He created the archbishopric of Lichfield in 787 partly to diminish Canterbury's independence.
