Edmund moved north in 944 and expelled both Olaf Sihtricson and Ragnald Guthfrithson from York, taking direct control of Northumbria for the first time since Athelstan death. The Chronicle records Edmund reduced all of Northumbria to his rule and expelled the two kings. However, Edmund was murdered in 946 and Northumbria slipped back to Norse control almost immediately.
