History & Significance

The revelation of the First Army Plot in April-May 1641, in which royalist officers planned to use the northern army to overawe Parliament, deepened the political crisis dramatically. When the plot became public, it shattered whatever remaining trust existed between Charles I and Parliament. The Army Plot exposure contributed to the parliamentary impeachment of army officers and accelerated the breakdown of constitutional order.
