History & Significance

After Penda's defeat at the Winwaed, his son Wulfhere reasserted Mercian power and recovered Lindsey from Northumbrian control. The recovery of Lindsey was one of the first acts of Mercian resurgence under Wulfhere. Lindsey, corresponding to modern Lincolnshire, was strategically important for access to the Humber.
