History & Significance

The MacLeans held a mortgage on the Rhinns of Islay and repeatedly attempted to foreclose on MacDonald of Islay lands. The MacDonalds resisted this seizure. Armed confrontations at and around Duart Castle were part of the ongoing contest. The dispute over the Rhinns was one of the principal causes of the 1598 Battle of Gruinart in which Lachlan Mor MacDonald was killed.
