During Bigods revolt in January 1537, there was a related attempt by Cumbrian rebels associated with the second wave of the Pilgrimage of Grace to move on Carlisle. The city and castle were held by royal forces and the attempt did not develop into a serious assault, but the threat kept royal forces in the area occupied.
