The Battle

History & Significance

The crossing of the Cherwell at Marston to the north-east of Oxford was a key Parliamentary operation during the 1646 siege. By securing the Cherwell crossings Parliamentary forces were able to link their northern and eastern siege lines, completing the encirclement of Oxford and cutting the last possible relief routes from the north.
