History & Significance

Malcolm III's son Duncan II had spent years as a hostage at the English court where he had become thoroughly Normanised. With English and Norman military support from William Rufus he invaded Scotland and drove out Donald Ban. Duncan was the first Scottish king to make a significant body grant with Norman witnesses and in the Norman style. His occupation was brief and contested from the start, as he had agreed to dismiss his English and Norman forces as a condition of Scottish support.
