History & Significance

Ecgberht hold over Mercia proved short-lived. Wiglaf, who had been expelled to make way for Ecgberht control, recovered Mercia in 830 and thereafter ruled independently. The recovery showed the limits of West Saxon power and that Mercia retained sufficient military resources to reassert itself. Mercia and Wessex then became roughly equal powers.
