History & Significance

Offa Dyke, the great earthwork running from the Dee to the Severn, was accompanied by military campaigns to enforce the new border. Offa conducted at least one major raid into Wales in 784 to demonstrate Mercian power. The Dyke was the greatest engineering project in eighth-century Britain and showed Mercian organisational capacity unmatched by any other English kingdom.
