History & Significance

Crinan, the powerful Abbot of Dunkeld who was also the father of the dead King Duncan I and grandfather of the future Malcolm III, mounted a major challenge to Macbeth in 1045. He was defeated and killed at what the Annals of Ulster record as a battle in which many fell on both sides. Crinan had been one of the most powerful figures in Scotland, controlling vast church lands and the ancient religious centre of Dunkeld. His death removed the most dangerous internal challenger to Macbeth and allowed the reign to stabilise.
