History & Significance

The Clan Chattan confederation included multiple clans with competing claims to leadership. The MacPhersons consistently disputed MacKintosh leadership and frequently quarrelled with other member clans over precedence. Internal feuding within the confederation, particularly between MacPhersons and Davidsons, was one of the persistent features of Badenoch life. This clash echoed the North Inch judicial combat of 1396 in miniature.
